about

Great Tap Root is a freak folk band based out of Baltimore, Maryland. The brainchild of Maryland native Ben Lorber, Great Tap Root paints lush, worldly folk portraits laced with an otherworldly Messianic intensity. Wedding energetic American roots and folk melodies with lilting, old-country European cadences, and utilizing a myriad of acoustic and electronic instruments, Great Tap Root draws communal joy and collective revelation out of the depths of human experience. Hymns ecstatic and terrifying, lamentations that rise from a gentle whisper to a full-throated scream, prayers, chanted in a primeval tremble, that cascade over the warbling brooks and dipping valleys of earthen melody, exploding chunks of steel and bone and blood and human clay, the dull mechanical grind of cackle-throated industry, the harsh incandescent tremor of creaturely woe, old prayer, fear of death, mortal instruments, flesh wrapping, soul caress, remembrance, remembrance, remembrance…

Track Name: Revenant
Look at the real world, I'm sorry god is dead. Look at the real world, I'm sorry god. We came down from the heavens and destroyed our towers, what do we do next? Powers on the mountains to find them. We came down from the heavens and destroyed our towers what do we do next? Fires in the cities to build them! But look at their cities and know their god is dead, look at their cities and know that god. Look at their families, and know that god is dead, look at the family and know that god. We came out from the buildings to find you, and now you're slowly coming, slowly coming. We came out of our houses to kill you, now we got just one question, just one question. We came from the cities to find you- it is here, it is here...come out of your house and know that god is dead, come out of your house and know that God. If You will come, I hope its dead of night when no one is sleeping, is sleeping. If you have come, I hope you found a generation worth keeping- but look out on this world, and know this god is dead, look out on this world and know this god. Look out on that world, and know that god is dead, look out on that world and know that god. look at the real world, i'm sorry god is dead, look at the real world i'm sorry god. If you have never been here why do we wait for you? Revenant, revenant.
Track Name: Good Boy
When I awoke, my head was pure, my fingers had not lengthened, my eyelids were secure. I could not hear a single thing, but something in me risen to overthrow the king, yes something in me quicken, a listening voice to sing. When I awoke, I was not whole, I dare not ask for vision to soothe my human soul. When I awoke, I was so poor, but trust in your division and fall before the door, and know that you are living and do not ask for more. And when I die, I shall not fear, but blessed be the living, for we are gathered here. I do not ask to know my god, but trust in trust in vision will help the creature grow. I fall asleep forever, and I say- Help me be a good boy, a good boy, a good boy! For too long have I been a human creature in the dust!
Track Name: Babylon
When Babylon fell we were as children, we wiped the blood from our hands, and brushed the dust from our eyes. When Babylon fell we were as children, we flocked as doves to the shore, our tents were bursting with song. For we had carried the weight on our backs, on our backs we carried the weight. When Babylon fell we were like those who dreamed, the mountains skipped like rams, the hills like little lambs. When Babylon fell we were as children, we had been waiting so long, we had been waiting so long. When Babylon fell we were like those who dreamed, return o children of men, our walls were trembling then. When Babylon fell we were as children, our dead arose from their graves and joined our voices in song. For we had carried the weight on our backs, on our backs we carried the weight. One by one we gather round the fountain, hey now...
Track Name: Wake
England falls not till the night does come, not till the flame does come, not till the plane does come, not till the ashes come, not till the bomb does come, not till the night does come, not till these pages come, not till the ages come. Wake, awake, awake- there is a war, blood on the shore, oil alone. Wake, awake, awake- there is a war, blood on the shore yearning for home.
Track Name: When We Were Released
When we were released, all around, all around, our limbs were shaking, our limbs were shaking for the sound. When we were asleep, all around, all around, it was beginning, it was beginning to resound. When we are awake, all around, all around, we rise returning to the ground. When we were released, all around, all around, our skin was trembling to be found. When we are awake, all around, all around, it comes returning to the ground.
Track Name: Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking
out of the cradle, endlessly rocking, billions of people, nations, nations gently hastening, quietly quickening down to death, down to death. look at our western civilization, capitalism meeting its end! we could not help it, nor could our government- try as we may, try as we may. Down to the people, fountains of industry, pleasures of war, spoils of war. We could not see it, dwelling among us- work of our hands, curse of our lands. Out of the cradle, endlessly rocking, weep for the millions living in ignorance and pray for the day, pray for the day. And it will come, another way- never do fear, children of may. the night has come, before the day- never do fear, children of may. And we will see another way- never do fear, children of may...
Track Name: Flame
Raise a flame to the last god, that we may see a face, and in remembrance hold closer to the word. That Empire may fall, and war forever cease, millennium anew. I think about the time when you're not mine, I think about the time when you're not mine. Your city rests upon no earthly hill, your watches wait upon no earthly time. I left my hands at the foot of your gate, I dragged my shoulders through your banquet hall. Your people brought me to my knees in shame, no television set could count them all. Raise a flame to the last god. Through darkening we shine and gather for the call. Good news is coming soon! The barricades will split, the foundation will shake, our eyes will turn away. I think about your cities in the dust, what would we do with all of your machines? And all the money spilling out the banks, and all the oil dripping from the trees? And who among the old can tell a tale? And who among the young can raise a song? Return return return! Raise a flame for the last god, that empire may fall. Weep in remembrance, and gather for the call. Take hold of my right hand, look deep into my eye, our covenant will stand. I think about the time when you're not mine, I think about the time when you're not mine. Your ashes linger on the city stones, your memory returns to me in rhyme. We had to take it into our own hands, they left it here for us to carry on. I think about the day when it is gone...rain, rain, horses coming down. Rays, rays, horses coming down.
Track Name: Remembrance
Not to see you, not to see you. Noticing eye, noticing eye. Not to see you, not to see you. Noticing eye, noticing eye. There is something I cannot remember! Heard it when I was young, even among ribbons and bows. There is something I cannot remember! If there is a light, then shine and shine and shine.
Track Name: Gone Gone
I got no one to be there when I'm gone, gone, gone gone my friend. The oldest of the old follows behind, follows behind. You're well on your way my child, you're well on your way towards the end. You got that look in your eyes my child, like you're afraid of reaching the end. I got no one to meet me when I'm gone, I got no one to miss me when I'm gone, gone, gone gone my friend. The oldest of the old follows behind, follows behind. I'm going away my child, I'm going away towards the end. You got that look in your eyes my child, like you're afraid to meet me in the end. Let the light shine through from a different space- in the dark of light you can't see no face. And the work of mourning it has no end, no the work of mourning it never never ends.
Track Name: Word
Into the fray, we left with nothing but the vision plain. Climbed through the night, on hands and feet amidst the glowing eyes. Shivering bones, we tried so hard to keep your secret sworn. We kept your word, hidden god hidden god. Who could have known, all along, all along our voice was heard! More than a name, it bears repeating in a different key. Half of our lives, we traveled hard to reach the solid ground. We kept your word, hidden god, hidden god. Who could have known, all along, all along our voice was heard, hidden god, hidden god. We kept your word. It was the right place at the right time, it was the right place at the right time. We found a new word for an old thing. We had our hard times, hard times. We found a good way, good way. It took a long time, long time. We came to the right place, at the right time. We found a new word for an old thing! It was the right place at the right time.
Track Name: Lamentations
You're gonna make me cry, oh you ageless rose...
Track Name: The Well Has Run Dry
The well has run dry, the spirit is nigh. Never know, never know.
Track Name: Ancestors
all your ancestors are looking at you. what do you do? turn around, kiss the ground, all your ancestors are looking at you- and they are following you there! down, down, into the ground, all your ancestors are following you- magnified, magnified with the weight of the earth. Even then...down to the root of the tip of the tongue, up to the tip of the top of the skull, close your eyes, open your ears, speak your mouth! All your ancestors are thinking of you, speaking of you, dreaming of you! All your ancestors are looking at you, what do you do? Turn to meet them, turn to meet them oh my god, turn, turn. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Branch of no planting, work of no hands! Branch of no planting, work of no hands!
Track Name: Amineye
Amineye, amineye- your children flock to your ghostly shores. your elders tremble behind their doors. your people wait for your return. your streets are beautiful when they burn, amineye, amineye. We sung your name in your better years. We paved your roads with our hopes and fears. We built your temples with our holy tears. I sing your name as the end draws near, amineye, amineye. We were the last to see you stand. We were the first to watch you fall, not by the weight of your machines amineye, amineye.
